Dis Fig – The Account ft. the wind between
Dis Fig, the project of Berlin-based, New Jersey-raised producer and vocalist Felicia Chen, is back with “The Account”, the lead single and opening track from her second solo album What To Make Of These Mortal Hands, out October 23 on Thrill Jockey. It’s her first solo full-length since her 2019 debut PURGE, arriving after a run of collaborations with The Bug, The Body and Asian Dope Boys, and it doubles as the doorway into the record’s world.
The single’s smartest move is that it doesn’t open with Chen at all. It starts with the voice of the wind between, the project of poet Eldon Somers, setting the scene before the vocals come in. Chen has said she wanted someone to function like a Greek chorus or narrator, teasing the record by leading with a voice that wasn’t hers. From there “The Account” moves through her whole practice: bass, distortion and electronics stacked under a voice that shifts from vulnerable to overwhelming, part of what she describes as trying to build a womb-like space through sound, a portal you’re guided into with care. The lyric works the same tension, dreaming of green fields beyond the concrete while turning over deception, faith and the weight of what gets lost, tender indulgences recast as weapons in what the song calls polite society.
